2018 Ojai Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball

“MOULIN ROUGE – Too Loose To Trek”

Come stroll through the streets of Paris to the magical Moulin Rouge – a cabaret of dancing and demi-decadence where patrons and performers dress to delight, impress and entice. Who knows, you may even rub shoulders with a famous artiste.

OJAI MARDI GRAS Masquerade Ball, Saturday, March 3rd, 2018

The Ojai Mardi Gras Wake-Up! Krewe is excited to host the 28th Annual Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball, Saturday March 3rd, 7:30 pm till 1:00 am, at the Ojai Art Center, 113 Montgomery Street in downtown Ojai.

This year’s theme is “MOULIN ROUGE Too Loose to Trek.” Come in costume or other adornment and join the frivolity. There will be dancing, costume contest, traditional bead toss, can-can dancers, and the coronation of this year’s Royalty, fittingly a ménage ŕ trois: Queen Luce (Lucy Roadarmel), Queen Too (Nancy Nazario) and King Trek (Bruce Smith). Costume contest categories include best male, female, couple, and theme costumes. Winners will receive a free ticket to next year’s Mardi Gras.

The Ojai Mardi Gras Band (OMGB) will once again move the crowd with the sounds of funk, soul, rock and Cajun. This year’s OMGB includes an outstanding ensemble of musicians, including Patricia Cardinali (guitar, percussion, vocals), Connie Early (vocals), Ron Seba (slide guitar, rhythm guitar, vocals), Jimmy Calire (electric piano, sax, accordion, vocals), George Friedenthal (keyboard, vocals), Maitland Ward (lead guitar), Stan Taylor (bass), Robert Rachelli (drums), and Burton Lang (congas).

Transformation of the Ojai Art Center into an iconic magical venue will occur through imaginative sets, art and decorations created by “Art Fools”, a brilliant, dedicated and playful collective of artists, sculptors, painters and interested volunteers led by Lucy Roadarmel. The Art Center gallery will show an exhibit of Parisian-themed art by local artists curated by Robin Parsons. The gallery art will remain on display all during March for public enjoyment and purchase.

A no-host bar serving luscious libations, a food truck serving enticing entrees, and a snack bar serving tasty treats will be available.

Tickets for Mardi Gras are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Advance tickets are available on-line at ojaimardigras.com, or can be purchased in Ojai at Studio Sauvageau, Cardinali Bros. Music, Ojai Coffee Roasting Co, and Ojai Creates.

Ojai Mardi Gras Fais-Do-Do

The following day, on Sunday March 4th from 12:00 to 3:00 pm, the party continues with a “Fais-Do-Do” Cajun Dance Party, a family-oriented musical event featuring the BeJammingtons playing New Orleans Funk. Bring the grandparents and your kids, plus your dancing shoes for an afternoon of music and Mardi Gras fun. Admission to the Sunday Fais-Do-Do is $5 for adults and free for kids under 12.

The Ojai Mardi Gras Wake-Up! Krewe, Inc. is a California Public Benefit Non-Profit Organization. Proceeds from the Masquerade Ball and Fais-Do-Do go to support music and art in the community. This year’s donations will be earmarked for music and art supplies and equipment for victims of the Thomas and Koenigstein Fires.

The first Ojai Mardi Gras was held in 1990 and was the creation of Lyle Mathews, a fun loving New Orleans expatriate. Although Lyle is no longer with us, all of her friends annually come together to create the Ojai Mardi Gras.
